I never really sat down to be a folkloric writer. It just sort of…happened.
To be fair, I write an awful lot of material which has nothing to do with folklore or mythology. But especially in my speculative fiction, I find myself often returning to creatures, people, or themes from ancient stories, and finding how they interact with our worldviews today. And many of my author friends write original stories but find inspiration or references in fairy tales, legends, myths.Read More
Today we’re celebrating the release of Where The Waters Turn Black, an epic fantasy novel inspired by the myths and legends of the South Pacific. Does that not sound utterly intriguing? Plus, I’ve got a special treat for you–a chance to get to know author Benedict Patrick and his heroine, Kaimana, through a super fun author / character interview.Read More
I’m so excited to have a story coming out in the Fantastic Creatures Anthology–which releases today! In celebration, we’re having a Scavenger Hunt with a super cool prize. Each of the twenty stories in the anthology focuses around a fantastic creature from folklore, myth, or urban legend. My contribution, Seekers, prays tribute to the stories of selkies (and brides stolen from the sea, which, if you know anything about me, you’ll know I would not approve of).Read More
This week marks the book birthday of Alina Sayre’s third book in her middle grade fantasy series The Voyages of the Legend, The Illuminator Rising. Alina has her covers created by that Mistress of Design, Jenny of Seedlings Design Studio, who has also designed the covers for all of my longer books. So lets just take a moment and revel in this cover, why don’t we? Synopsis: Driven from their home island of Rhynlyr, Ellie and her friends must solve a riddle to find the survivors of the Vestigia Roi. But instead of a safe haven, they discover a hopeless band of refugees paralyzed by...Read More
Today I’m happy to share the release of A Familiar Darkness by Heather Sutherlin. I met Heather on an author forum and she blew me away by her kindness and helpfulness. I’m excited to check out her latest work! Archer is a magician with a few more tricks up his sleeve than even the savviest street performer could imagine. Devilishly handsome and full of dark secrets, his devil-may-care attitude came at a price and unfortunately for him, the devil may care after all. When he meets Hannah, a runaway whose art is more than it seems, he’s determined to keep her and her drama at arm’s...Read More
Today I’m happy to share the release of Spiderworld by Richard Bunning. Richard writes metaphysical sci-fi, and we are both part of the Awesome Indies. I’m looking forward to checking this read out! Looking for something different? AIA Publishing has just released its fifth book, and in line with previous fiction titles, the book has a unique voice and a metaphysical bent. Spiderworld by Richard Bunning turns the tables on humans and spiders, and makes you think about humankind’s relationship with animals and with each other. Not even the time-lord, Orlando Oversight, knows...Read More
